How free movement is wrecking Romania (CPBML guest post)

In February this year there was a short news item in the Romanian news. An American automotive parts producer, Delphi Packard, announced that it was shutting its factory in Moldova Noua, in the south west of the country, because it can’t get enough workers to enable full production. 

That item didn’t make it into the newspapers here. That’s hardly a surprise: there’s been plenty of discussion about the effect on Britain of the EU’s free movement of labour – but little about its effect on the countries whose workers come to Britain to work. Those who champion free movement seem oblivious to the wreckage the policy leaves behind.

The 700 or so workers who were employed in the factory will swell the ranks of the local unemployed or, more likely, join the millions of their compatriots who have gone abroad in search of work.

The old and children

Romania has become a country populated mainly by the old and by children. Working-age adults are thin on the ground, except in August and around Christmas, when they come home for a visit. 

And land prices have slumped, says a September 2018 report by Colliers International. Properties in the capital Bucharest are just 50 per cent of their 2008 values – that’s one year after Romania joined the EU.

While the British press is piling up scare stories of Jersey potatoes left to rot in fields when free movement to Britain ends, the nightmare of labour shortages has already hit Romania. 

Describing an idyllic Bruegel-like harvest scene in the country’s Maramures Valley, Timestravel writer Chris Haslam noted this year, “Look closer, though, and you notice that unlike Bruegel’s depiction of strapping youths and comely maidens, nobody in these fields is under 50 years old.”

The young have gone. “The kids have left,” one farmer sighed to Haslam. “My son is driving a delivery truck in Peterborough.” 

Exodus abroad

Since Romania became part of the EU in 2007, 3.7 million Romanians have left to work abroad (though they are still counted officially as part of the population). To put that number in perspective, in 2007 the working age population amounted to 14 million, so around a quarter of the country’s workers have gone.

Many of those who left did so after 2014, when all restrictions on movement for work within the EU were lifted for Romania (and Bulgaria, which joined the EU at the same time as Romania). Before 2014 some countries required work permits. Others, such as Ireland, had allowed unrestricted movement since 2012.

The result was an outpouring of workers – not just into low-paid unskilled manual work. It affected skilled workers, too. In the professions, where work permits are easier to come by, the exodus started even earlier.

And it came swiftly. One of the most acute areas of labour shortage is in medicine. For all the talk of an NHS crisis when Britain leaves the EU, the real crisis is in countries such as Romania. Between 2011 and November 2013 fully a third of Romania’s hospital doctors left the country.

No wonder Professor Vasile Astarastoae, president of the Romanian College of Physicians, talked to The Guardian about “a major crisis”. 

“If you think that the situation is bad in Bucharest, in the rural areas it’s tragic,” he said in an interview, this time to the Financial Times in January 2014. “Those who used to operate there are now filling the gaps left from those who have migrated abroad.” In many rural towns and villages there are no doctors at all.

Disappearing doctors

A year later, Viorel Husanu, president of national healthcare union Sanitas, told the news agency Agerpres that half of Romania’s doctors had left – 14,000 of them, along with 28,000 nurses. According to Deutsche Welle, Germany’s public international broadcaster, they were joined by 43,000 pharmacists. Estimates suggest that the bulk of the doctors have gone to Germany, France and Britain.

By 2017, even The Independent was reporting that a third of hospital positions in the country are lying vacant. In March this year, the government responded by raising medical salaries by 70 per cent, though Romanian doctors will still be able to earn two to three times as much by working in France, Germany and Britain, for example. 

In order to fund the rise, the government hiked employees’ social security contributions by 25 per cent (at the same time as reducing employers’ contributions).

Romania is also haemorrhaging researchers. Around 20,000 now work abroad, according to the Romanian Association for Health Promotion – proportionately, as large a loss as the flight of doctors. These include many of Romania’s best scientists, which makes it harder for those left behind to gain science funding from the EU – virtually the only source available.

Added to this, around 300,000 young Romanians have chosen to study abroad, in search of better education and better job prospects after they graduate. The result is a decimation of the talent available to the country.  

EU funding stranglehold

And there’s a further twist of the EU knife. With its skilled workers lured abroad and its economy severely damaged, Romania has become almost totally dependent on the EU. Most of its public funding – 70 per cent – comes from the EU’s regional funds (for comparison, EU regional funds account for 5% of Austria’s spending). And 70 per cent of its exports go to other EU countries. 

Meanwhile, a report from a German political institute, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, in 2014 suggests that the outflow of workers is set to continue. Almost 80 per cent of young people (15 to 29) polled by the institute wanted either strongly (42 per cent) or very strongly (36.9 per cent) to be established outside Romania within 10 years.

The EU is turning Romania into a wasteland – and the worst is yet to come, according to the United Nations. It forecast last year that the country’s population, currently around 19,700,000, will fall to 16,400,000 by 2050 and below 12,100,000 by 2100.

That is the EU, destroyer of nations.

…and union rights attacked too

It’s been well documented – and not just in Europe – that when the global financial institutions impose “structural adjustments” it leads to an increase in migration. Romania has had more than its share of these “adjustments”. You’d almost think that encouraging migration was a deliberate policy.

When the financial crisis of 2008 struck, Romania was hit hard. Cap in hand, it went to the EU and asked for €20 billion to keep itself afloat. The “Troika” (European Commission, European Central Bank, International Monetary Fund) that asset-stripped Greece was happy to oblige.

But there were conditions (as in Greece): workers’ rights, both individual and collective, were savagely cut. As the Institute of Employment Rights reported in 2016, new provisions made it easier for employers to hire and fire, as well as introduce “flexible” employment contracts. 

Cross-sectoral collective bargaining was outlawed. Even sectoral collective agreements were hamstrung, and their number fell by 60 per cent. Public sector salaries were slashed by a quarter, along with reductions in benefits.

That is the EU, destroyer of trade union rights.

Siren voices are telling us that we should be negotiating Free Trade Agreements with the US, with the EU, with just about anybody…

Karl Marx and Frederick Engels declared in the Communist Manifesto that capitalism had “resolved personal worth into exchange value” and wiped out all previous freedoms to establish just the one: “Free Trade”. And “Free Trade”, as we have learnt, is the opposite of freedom for a sovereign country.

Both a means and an end, trade is the “heavy artillery” of capitalism, they said, the weapon with which it batters down the “Chinese walls” protecting nations. “It compels all nations, on pain of extinction, to adopt the bourgeois mode of production; it compels them to introduce what it calls civilisation into their midst; i.e., to become bourgeois themselves.”

That was 170 years ago. And it’s as true as ever today. But capitalism has not had everything its own way, and its dream – for us a nightmare vision – of a world where free trade rules unhindered is not yet reality.

World domination

Britain adopted free trade – trade with few or no tariffs, quotas or restrictions – for much of the economy around 1840. It was a conscious rejection of a strategy (known as mercantilism) of protecting trade with the empire. India, Australia, Canada, South Africa – these were no longer enough. British capital was out to take over the world.

In this struggle, as in all its struggles, it sought to enlist the support of the working class, promising workers cheap bread. The Chartists, at least, were too savvy for this, pointing out that if the price of bread came down, so too would wages, the price of labour. Cheap food, usually poor quality and produced under dubious conditions, always means cheap labour and is therefore good for the employer.

The first salvos in this new trade war came when Britain forced China to import opium. How’s that for ethical capitalism? Opium smoking had been illegal in China since 1729. In order to break down China’s control over exports through Canton (now Guandong) and get its hands on the country’s silver, the East India Company started auctioning opium grown in India to independent Chinese merchants.

In 1839, concerned at the growing number of addicts, the Chinese government seized 20,000 chests of opium – over a million kilograms, and easily the biggest drugs haul in history. Britain responded by sending the Royal Navy, which humiliated the Chinese fleet and forced a settlement favourable to the East India Company. “Gunboat diplomacy” had arrived.

Then, between 1846 and 1849, the government abolished the Corn Laws, which it was claimed kept the price of bread artificially high by effectively banning imports from abroad. The price of grain was initially unaffected, but when good harvests and cheap steamship transport kicked in around 20 years later, imports soared. In the 1830s just 2 per cent of Britain’s grain was imported. By the 1880s that figure had risen to 45 per cent (65 per cent for wheat).

Fast forward to 1939, and Britain was importing 70 per cent of its food. Over the course of World War II more than 36,000 merchant seamen and women and roughly as many Allied sailors died plugging that gap and similar gaps in strategic materials.

In 2018, with trade an object of everyday political debate and disinformation in the context of the Brexit negotiations, workers are being urged to back free trade once again. Where do the interests of workers lie?

Single market

Not with free trade. We already have ample experience of that: it’s called the European Union, which operates on the basis of the “free” (for the employer) movement of goods,capital, services and workers.

And free trade has moved on since the 19th century, when the idea related exclusively to trade in goods. The modern free trade agreements are hardly about goods at all: they are about services, especially financial services and investment, and even free movement of labour. What’s more, most modern free trade deals target “restrictions” such as legislation on workers’ rights, environment laws and consumer protection.

Free trade means countries that seek to protect industries and services are bound in legal chains. Capital is free to invest in privatised companies, but countries are told what can and can’t be in public ownership.

It’s excellent for capital and bad for workers, which is why workers rejected that model in the referendum of 2016.

The free traders say they don’t want to be restricted by the EU, but their aim is a whole planet built in the image of the EU. They want a world where capital can move seamlessly from country to country, one where nation states cede control to multinationals and – in the event of any dispute – their lawyers. They call it “globalisation” and present it as inevitable and immutable.

The argument is often portrayed as a battle between those who favour trading with the US and those who favour ties with the EU. But that ignores the fact that the greatest supporters of EU integration are the US multinationals themselves.

You need look no further than the lobby group they set up to influence Brussels policy, the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union, or AmCham EU for short. Its agenda is clear: the EU needs to take powers over investment policy and services away from its member states.

In July 2017 it welcomed EU’s Court of Justice ruling on the EU/Singapore Free Trade Agreement. That ruling clarified the Commission’s sphere of competence in signing such agreements but said that at present the bits relating to portfolio investment and disputes settlement need agreement from member states. But moving forward, added AmCham EU, “the EU needs to establish a new tradition of seeking political and legal acceptance of EU trade policy.”

The language is coded, but it couldn’t be clearer, coming as it does from the body with the tag-line “Speaking for American Business in Europe”.

To the world’s multinationals and finance capitalists, sovereign states are thoroughly undesirable, an obstacle to profit. Worst of all are nation states, where sovereignty is supported by shared culture and history.

‘WE DON’T WANT FREE TRADE: WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO TRADE FREELY.’

Nation states may have grown up in Europe along with the rise of the bourgeoisie, but now they stand as the last bulwark against the domination of finance capital. The bourgeoisie has split – some still need the nation, most have abandoned it – but workers know that if we can’t control our own country we have no chance at all.

The EU’s historic mission has been to sew up an entire continent and deliver it into the hands of the multinational corporations through the medium of free trade.

Our referendum vote has dented that strategy, but it still stands. The latest tactic is to tell us – as the Japanese ambassador did on 8 February – that the multinationals will abandon Britain if we don’t have free trade with the EU.

The modern kind of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was piloted in 1987 with the deal between the US and Canada, later expanded to take in Mexico and become NAFTA. With the World Trade Organization’s push to “liberalise” trade stalling (see Box 1), the US went hunting for new agreements, starting with Guatemala.

Then it went for a big one: the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, between the US, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

China was pointedly excluded. The aim was to bypass the World Trade Organization and present China with the fait accompli of a new world trading order, new rules for everyone. Once again, capitalism was using trade to try to batter down a Chinese wall. Barack Obama was explicit:  “If we don’t pass this agreement – if America doesn’t write those rules – then countries like China will.”

But there was opposition, not least in the US itself. The TPP agreement was signed in 2016, but it has never been implemented – strangled at birth when Donald Trump withdrew the US from it saying it put American jobs at risk.

The EU was not far behind, setting off to negotiate FTAs with Canada, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and so on. Progress has been snail-like. But the big prize has been an FTA with the US – the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, TTIP.

‘IF WE JUST SIT AND DO NOTHING, THERE’S NOTHING TO PROTECT US FROM TTIP.’

Negotiations started in 2013, but were still only halfway through the list of topics when Trump was elected and everything ground to a halt. The US would, it appears, like to restart the negotiations, but has been waiting for a government to be formed in Germany. (After all, no one can lift a finger in the EU without German approval.)

During the referendum campaign Obama warned that if Britain voted to leave we would go to “the back of the queue” when it came to negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The threat backfired: the reaction of many people was, “Really? Can we have that in writing?”

Now we have Trump saying an FTA with Britain could be sewn up “very, very quickly”. Leaving aside the Trump hype (“very quickly” and “trade deals” are two phrases that should never figure in the same sentence), the threat is real.

What do we want?

Some supporters of the EU here are prone to shouting loudly that leaving won’t protect us from TTIP. Like all good lies, it’s based on a half-truth. If we just sit and do nothing, then of course there’s nothing to protect us from TTIP and similar trade agreements.

But sitting and doing nothing is precisely what these EU fans suggest: that parliament should overturn the people’s referendum decision. If that happens, then we know exactly where we will be: stuck in the EU and banned from making a trade agreement of any kind with any country.

Only outside of the EU – and therefore outside the customs union – will the UK be able to take up its seat at the World Trade Organization. It’s still a member, formally, but it gave up its independent voice when it joined the European Economic Community and its customs union in 1973.

Outside the EU Britain will be able to make its own trade agreements. Workers must make it clear that we don’t want free trade: we want to be able to trade freely, which is quite another thing.

Against the freedom of the multinationals and finance capital, we must assert the freedom to protect our industries, services, agriculture and fisheries.

The last thing we want is to see the country flooded with cheap agricultural imports that knock a few pennies off the cost but lay waste to British farms and make us dependent on imports.

Nor do we want to be a dumping ground for German steel, or Chinese steel for that matter. We should insist that British steel is used on the new railways such as HS2 – and that British-made locomotives and carriages run on the new lines as well.

And if the politicians really screw up their courage, they might even insist that pharmaceutical multinationals like Pfizer that want to sell their overpriced drugs to the NHS manufacture them in Britain. Which is what a (Conservative) government forced Pfizer to do in 1952!

Happy Independence Day 2018: Now to Make Brexit Happen

Today is the Second Anniversary of the historic vote by the British People to reclaim our sovereignty and get out of the capitalist empire, the EU.  By rights, had the result been honoured, rather than the pathetic triggering of Article 50, and the 'negotiation' of our relationship with the tyranny of Brussels, today would be the day for us to celebrate two years of freedom.  The EUrophile traitors in Westminster are doing all they can to thwart the democratic will of the people. The paid lackeys of George Soros are attacking people for wanting to be free. The Media ignores us, or if it does refer to the 17.4 million people who voted for freedom, it calls us thick, bigoted, xenophobic and all other manner of insults - insults which if aimed at anyone other than the British Working Class, would result in police attention.

Today, the People marched again to demand that the government shred the Article 50 trap, repeal the European Communities Act (1972), and get us out of the EU immediately.  The march was - of course - ignored by the media, although amusingly the BBC briefly covered it by accident.  Video footage of some of the pro-Brexit demonstrations:

As I’ve written before, EU supporters are engaged in total war against democracy. Their dream is to dismantle British democracy before the eyes of the world and reduce us to a society where no meaningful votes are ever held; where voting only exists to confirm decisions already made by a ruling elite, and where the biggest vote in our history is indefinitely disregarded.

Because they don’t have the courage or integrity to come right out and admit this, they endlessly devise ways of attacking democracy by stealth, with dog-whistle phrases like ‘populism‘. This essay is about how they seek to destroy democracy whilst pretending to be simply concerned with mundane trade technicalities.

After they lost the referendum EU supporters sought to keep us in the Single Market. When it was gently pointed out that would mean us not democratically governing ourselves they called for us to instead remain in the EEA but that was open to the same objection; so then it was The Customs Union, then a customs union, then ‘a customs partnership‘ and so on. They continually call for ‘full access‘, ‘frictionless trade‘, ‘harmonisation‘ and ‘alignment‘. And what could be wrong with that? Having ‘access‘ sounds like a good thing right? And friction sounds like a bad thing? And who could object to ‘harmonising‘ things to make them all nice and harmonious? I will explain:

I live in East Sussex. East Sussex has ‘fully aligned‘, ‘frictionless‘ trade with West Sussex. Between the two there is free movement of goods, services, labour and capital. People from East Sussex can work in West Sussex. Goods and services traded in one can be traded in the other just as easily. This is because they are part of the same nation. We can be an independent nation or we can have ‘fully aligned frictionless trade‘ but not both. To be independent is to have your own system. To have the same system is to be not independent.

It is therefore oxymoronic to claim to respect the referendum result whilst calling for ‘alignment‘, ‘full access‘ or ‘frictionless trade‘: to have these things is to not have the independence we voted for. And to campaign for them is to campaign against honouring the democratic vote.

Seriously, is their offer that we would still be able to vote for better laws – just so long as those laws have nothing to do with goods, services, labour and capital? But that’s everything!

So don’t think calls for ‘harmonisation‘ are innocuous technicalities. They are not. The EU seeks to control how we trade in order to achieve their ultimate goal of controlling every aspect of our society. Their calls for ‘aligned, frictionless, harmonised, access‘ are a mendacious attempt to achieve through technocratic stealth what they cannot achieve through democratic vote.

Fighting Globalism Locally and Internationally

Commuting to work is an un-natural and unhealthy part of life for many people.  A direct consequence of commuting is that free time is greatly reduced.  Having to travel many miles from home for very mundane work is a reality which highlights how capitalism is a broken system.  People who live in areas where there is a shortage of work doubtless will be taking work from someone in the area to which they travel.

It is ironic that the demand for the 'right to work' has allowed the multi-nationals to create work which turns the employee into a cog in a machine.  We have reached the point that those who are able to get even the meagrest of livings are told that they must feel fortunate to have any work at all, but surely quality of life should be more important than the quantity of money an employee can generate?

The daily journey which so many people endure is the result of work in every home town being scarce.  This situation is a local mirror to the global one.  How much better life would be if local communities provided work for their own, free from outside interference.  In times gone by, every community would have had artisans and small traders to provide for everyone needs.  This would have been a genuine example of each individual contributing according to ability, for the good of the whole.  The social bonds were the cement which made such life so worthy.  It was only with the enclosures of the land and the manipulation of land and labour that the creation of the capitalist system came about, and that the natural society was undermined and split by greed.

A return to the natural society is vital for humanity.  It is an outrage that the globalists are able to displace people by military and economic warfare, forcing them to have to travel across the globe in search for work and for material survival.  The displacement of people in the daily commute to work, is caused by the same globalist antipathy to local communities.

Defeating the entire globalist mafia is a daunting task, but as the saying goes, 'how does one eat an elephant?  A small bite at a time.'  So it is with our struggle.  It is natural to buy locally, trade locally, work locally.  This is the essence of local communities, and this is why such a lifestyle has become all but impossible for most people.

The globalists know that should we unite as local socialist societies, tied in comradeship with others like us internationally, they will be finished, and so they have created laws to ban discussion about such things as mass migration.  The laws which claim to combat 'discrimination', really are designed to promote division amongst the Working Class and a false loyalty to the oppressor class which is behind global dislocation yet claims to be a part of the nation just like the rest of us.  The globalists are liars, and could not care less about any humans of any nation.

The darling of the conservative voting part of the population, is Jacob Rees-Mogg: a man who is of aristocratic lineage, making him a part of the Ruling Class by birth, and not just a greedy bourgeois parasite by choice, like the majority of his party.  Mogg is portrayed as the alternative to Theresa May.  Whereas she is doing all she can to keep us saddled to the capitalist EU, with its open borders and mass migration ethos, Mogg is portrayed as the one who will break the UK out of the EU and transform GB from Great Britain to Global Britain.  Mot many people think of what this means.

The Moglodyte Tories seek a Britain where all the victories of Socialism are overturned, where Union Laws are gone, where all the legislation protecting Workers' Rights (including Health and Safety Regulations, Minimum Wage, Maximum Working Hours, Statutory Sick Pay/Holidays) are wiped away, so that 'global britain' can be competitive in the capitalist free market.  The Mogg Tories (all Tories in fact) are keen to sell the NHS to US corporations, to get rid of Social Housing, and to do away with all that stands in the way of profits for the Ruling Class.  Far from enforcing the borders, they would demand a constant stream of cheap labour and ever more draconian laws to at once make people resent the migrants, and focus on the symptoms of capitalism, rather than the central problems of capitalism itself - namely the exploiting bourgeois class and the ruling parasites who they take their orders from.

The Labour Party Blairite faction are clamouring for the UK to stay in the Customs Union, making their 'Brexit' as false as Theresa May's.  Under Capitalism, we will either have open borders as a part of the EU in all but name, or as a 'global britain' in which the only difference is that we lose any measures which have prevented total exploitation.  We cannot fight Globalism as a part of the Capitalist System; We have to break our countries free from that system, and embrace Total Socialism.

Revolutionary Patriotic Socialism is the answer to the capitalist nightmare. An SMPBI Republic of the Isles would be built on community lines, with large cities broken into smaller towns, and with all housing and work being re-ordered so that no-one would have to travel to another town as a part of his or her working life.  The mass migration of cheap labour would be ended as the borders would be sealed tight, and our Internationalist endeavours would promote Socialism in all countries, thus ending the need for people to leave their homelands in search of a better life elsewhere.

Capitalism is injurious to every aspect of our lives. Revolutionary Patriotic Socialism provides the answers to all the ills of Capitalism.  In the Republic of the Isles, Localism will be the focus of everyday life for the People. Localism inside the Isles will be backed by Inter-Nationalism to promote our model to all who strive for freedom; offering it as a way of restoring communities and breaking free from the Globalist menace.  We espouse 'Socialism in One Country, One Country at a Time', with every country having its own version of Socialism, with Borders kept in place to prevent multinationalism digging its way in.  By this way, the capitalist disease will be rooted out and destroyed in our lands; in all lands.

The vicious treatment of the Windrush Britons – who arrived from the Caribbean as children from 1948 to 1971 – contrasts starkly with the position of EU nationals under the Brexit transition agreement.  It shines a light on how so-called “free movement” has operated to discriminate against British people (whether of Commonwealth origin or not).

To focus on alleged bureaucratic bungling is to miss the point. The machinery of government can be efficient when it wants to be. At heart of the problem is that no government – not for decades – has grasped why the British people think it ought to have a migration policy that favours British workers.

In fact, this government and its predecessors have  wanted to move in the opposite direction.

Ever since Britain accepted the EU concept of free movement, EU nationals have been able to bring in children, spouses, and the children of spouses, from anywhere in the world without having to meet all the thresholds that are required of UK citizens.

Now, with the transition agreement, they have further rights. In particular (Article 10), EU nationals resident in Britain before the end of the transition period will retain the right of permanent residence even if they have been absent from Britain for a period of more than five years.

Yet the Windrush Britons were told that any absence from the UK since 1988 lasting more than two years would disqualify them from residence. One, Junior Green, was told in 2009 by the Home Office that to update his passport he had to prove he had lived here for each of the previous 10 years.

EU nationals seeking permanent residence in Britain are guaranteed a form that is “short, simple, user friendly”. The NTL (No Time Limit) form that was required of Windrush Britons is 21 pages long, with an additional seven pages of guidance.

For EU nationals, the transition agreement says that the UK “shall ensure that administrative procedures for applications are smooth, transparent and simple and that any unnecessary administrative burdens are avoided”. Contrast that with the obstacle course that was placed in the path of the Windrush Britons before the tsunami of public outrage forced a change of policy.

And then there’s the cost. The NTL application cost £229 for a single person and £229 for each dependent. Plus a Biometric Residence Permit at £19.20 per person. An EU national applying for settled status will pay “no more than the cost charged to British citizens for a UK passport” – £85.

What’s wrong about all this? Just about everything. The casual disregard for basic humanity shown by successive governments – Labour, Coalition and Conservative – is a disgrace.

Brexit is our chance to plan an immigration policy that doesn’t discriminate against British citizens – or favour citizens of EU states.

HE STARTED HIS PARTY (FIDESZ) AS A NATIONAL CONSERVATIVE PARTY BUT IN RECENT YEARS EMBRACED POPULISM AND SOFT EURO-SCEPTICISM. DURING THE 2015-2016 REFUGEES CRISIS HE STUCK OUT BY REFUSING TO BEND OVER TO BRUSSELS' AND MERKEL'S LUNACY BY CLOSING THE BORDERS AND NOT ALLOWING PEOPLE INTO HUNGARY.

HIS INFLUENCE SPREAD ACROSS THE BORDERS AS POLAND AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC ALSO ADOPTED LIKE-MINDED GOVERNMENTS. THE VISEGRAD COUNTRIES CAME CLOSER IN RECENT YEARS. Fishing - blame Westminster not the EU: Wilberg on Wednesday

"Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and others like to say that the CFP has “destroyed” the British fishing industry or “halved” the number of British fishermen. In fact, in terms of profits of the big fishing companies, the British industry is one of the most successful in the EU.

If the numbers of fishermen in the UK have fallen sharply since 1973, it is partly the fault of the cod wars. It is also the result of the sale and concentration of quotas into fewer and fewer hands – something that successive British governments have permitted or encouraged.

Thus lucrative Scottish white fish quotas are now dominated by three or four multimillion-pound companies based in north-east Scotland. Worse, 50% of all English quotas and 88% of Welsh quotas are “owned” by British-flagged ships that are really Spanish or Dutch or Icelandic. One Dutch mega-trawler has the right to catch 24% of the total English quota.

By contrast, the inshore fleet – fishing within 12 miles, using boats mostly shorter than 10 metres, with much lighter ecological impact - is allowed just 4% of the total English quota. None of this has anything to do with the EU, which is why you never hear Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage complain about it. The divvying out of national quotas is purely the responsibility of national government. It is time for it to abandon its misleading rhetoric on fishing policy, and put forward reasonable proposals to Brussels.

There is a case for adjusting the 1983 EU quota pattern in Britain’s favour. There is, above all, a case for small-scale fishing communities to be given a substantial increase in their share of the British catch. That would be a genuine Brexit, and ecological, bonus – even if it has nothing to do with Brexit"

Industrial fishing has no place in the British Isles.  It destroys livelihoods and ruins the environment.  The most important thing for the fishing communities and for the seas themselves is for trawlers and super trawlers to be banned from our waters.  The seas ca cope with the little boats which traditionally bring home the fish - and in that instance, there is scope to share our seas. But industrial fishing is marine genocide and has to be stopped in its entirety, and until our seas recover it is the morally right thing to do, to ban all outside fishing and to stringently police our own fishing boats.  

No to industrial farming, whether on land or water.  All food production must be ethical and ecologically sound. SMPBI will accept nothing less than the primacy of the environment in all matters, and completely ethical farming, including the method in which the living creatures are killed to become our food.

• Keeping the UK tied to the EU military through snide policy deals which the people have no chance to oppose.  
• The acceptance of the arrival of as many EU nationals as possible until the end of the 'transition' period, which is a kick in the face for those who voted Leave in order to stop the Capitalist abuse of cheap labour.  All who come will be allowed to stay permanently, ensuring wages are depressed, working conditions undermined, and unemployment kept high enough to scare people into taking even the worst jobs that can be found.
• Giving away our fishing waters, effectively handing over massive amounts of our territory
• Leaving the north of Ireland in the EU in all but name, but having no Irish Sea border, so in reality having a completely open border with the EU for anyone to stroll through, with nothing we can do about it.

The servile May regime is not only a lackey to the City and EU, it is a complicit poodle working for the Global War Criminals.

The recent Novichok fabrication in which the Russian Federation was libelled as having killed injured an 'ex'-spy in the UK, is being repeated over and over so that people will associate Russia with WMDs, just in time for the latest lie that the Syrian Arab Army has used comparable WMDs on the so-called Rebels, all with Russian blessing.

The fable which is being weaved together is that Bashar Al-Assad likes to kill his own people, just because. And the evil Russians love to help him to do so, again, just because.  That is it, no reason, no logic, just lies.  No-one is told that the Damascus area of Douma was captured by Jaish al-Islam (a terrorist organisation which has massacred vast numbers of civilians, enslaved and raped many women) and that the SAA drove out the terrorists in order to liberate the area and rescue those who survived the brutal JAI occupation - a fraction of those who were captured.  Perhaps this forgetfulness on behalf of the media and UK regime is due to JAI being funded by the Zionist Saudis, which the Zionist UK regime is more than happy to sell arms to, making them directly culpable for the crimes of JAI?

The US puppet president, Donald Trump, has declared that he wants to bomb Syria. Theresa May has hinted that she is willing to issue an executive order, bypassing the democratic process in Parliament, to add the UK military to the Coalition of Zion, to murder more Syrians, and make more profits in armaments sales and post-war reconstruction contracts (not forgetting Oil profits when the natural resources of Syria can be plundered).

May is parroting Tony Blair's infamous Iraq WMD lie, just substituting Syria for Iraq and Bashar al-Assad for Saddam Hussein - a heroic man, lied about (in the same way as Gaddafi after him), and a man who kept his country safe from the globalist parasites and the religious idiots (again like Gaddafi and al-Assad)

Theresa May is a liar and a scoundrel. She is a willing Globalist. She is more than happy to be a War Criminal.  There is not much we can do to stop her.  What we can do is inform people of the mendacity of the UK regime.  The May elections are an opportunity to send the regime a clear message that it is hated and opposed.  We need to get the message out that the UK is complicit in crimes against humanity, and mobilise the people to hit the politicians where it hurts.  If people vote tactically for anyone at all who has a chance of knocking the tories out of local government, they will lose control of council after council, and with that the loss of the purse strings of the people at local level. The Tory members will be outraged if their party is wiped out at the elections - even if only in terms of control of councils, rather than total loss of councillors.  This is the best way of forcing change in the Tory party and stopping Mad May.  It isn't much, but we have to do what we can.

Theresa May is the enemy of the UK. Point 1: Juncker is the man who has always just insisted to May that “Brexit means Brexit”.

Point 2: If May and Juncker are in collusion then why has Juncker been vilified for NOT supporting “the confrontation between the West and Russia”?

“European Union boss Jean-Claude Juncker has been criticised after his "nauseating" letter of congratulations to Russia's Vladimir Putin failed to mention the Salisbury nerve agent attack. The European Commission President wrote to Mr Putin on Tuesday to congratulate the Russian leader on his recent re-election. However, the top Brussels official immediately was attacked for NEGLECTING TO INCLUDE a reference to the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia using the chemical weapon Novichok.

In his letter, Mr Juncker sent Mr Putin his "congratulations on your re-election as President of the Russian Federation". "I have always argued that positive relations between the European Union and the Russian Federation are crucial to the security of our continent," he wrote.  "Our common objective should be to re-establish a cooperative pan-European security order. I hope that you will use your fourth term in office to pursue this goal. I will always be a partner in this endeavour. I wish you every success in carrying out your high responsibilities."

However, the leader of Conservative MEPs in the European Parliament, Ashley Fox, branded the letter "disgraceful" as he accused Mr Juncker of "appeasing" the Russian President. "To congratulate Vladimir Putin on his election victory without referring to the clear ballot rigging that took place is bad enough," he said.

"But his failure to mention Russia's responsibility for a military nerve agent attack on innocent people in my constituency is nauseating.”

“Asked if the Prime Minister was disappointed Mr Juncker had not referred to the Salisbury attack in his letter to Mr Putin, Theresa May's official spokesman said: "What I would point to is the strong response which you have seen from across the EU, from leaders in condemning what happened in Salisbury and standing with the UK." Wishful thinking from Theresa May. Whilst many in the EU are nodding politely to May, much more is going on behind the scenes in the EU. Just a few ‘minor’ points:

Millions of Euros are being spent by the EU to prevent Libya being used as a principal migrant route to Europe via Italy.

There are those in the EU who see a united European Defence Force as a way of disentangle Europe from NATO and the U.S.

The EU is also working behind the scenes to block predatory ‘inward investment’ from the USA - which Britain will be WIDE OPEN TO after Brexit.

Europe has no interest in paying for high-priced gas from the US - and Germany has just approved the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia.

KEYPOINT: the EU is NOT the monolith it is made out to be. There are even those in the EU ‘Establishment’ as well as the EU Member States who are against anti-Russian sanctions - or even wish Europe to have the united military and economic power to stand up to the US Atlanticist Empire and its Anglo-Zionist and Polish lapdogs. There is much more that could be written on this subject. We must just learn to research thoroughly,  ‘read between the lines’ - and see those current and future trajectories of geopolitical development in Europe and Eurasia which defy simplistic readings.

EU Member States in favor of lifting Russian sanctions:
Bulgaria: Bulgaria considers the sanctions regime against Russia an obstacle to its own economy. 72% of Bulgarians have a positive view of Russia.
Cyprus: The Cyprian government has opposed sanctions against Russia, especially on the basis of the two countries’ economic ties, although the actual economic impact of the sanctions has been limited.
Czech Republic: The stance of the Czech Republic towards Russia changed significantly following the crisis in Ukraine and Russia’s subsequent annexation of Crimea. Despite the ambivalent positions of some individual politicians, as well as a high dependence on imports from Russia. President Miloš Zeman has repeatedly criticized the EU sanctions against Russia. Zeman also retains strong ties to Russian business.
Greece: Greece has historically been one of Russia’s advocate within the EU, advocating for the Kremlin’s interests in Brussels.  The current Greek government maintains exceptionally close ties with the Kremlin and other prominent Russian figures. Greece has typically expressed opposition to any EU measures that could alienate Russia. Greece is best described as one of the EU’s three ‘Kremlin friendlies’, together with Italy and Cyprus. 66% of Greeks have a positive view of Russia.
Italy: Though traditionally a country with deep economic ties to Russia, Italy has shown strong support for a common EU and NATO stance on Russia. At the same time, Italy does not wish to completely alienate Russia, and continues to believe that a dialogue is possible. Italian politics is full of pro Russian elements and many politicians believe that the EU sanctions are harmful to Italy and should therefore be lifted.
Slovenia: After the annexation of Crimea, Slovenia fully supported Ukrainian integrity and fulfilment of the Minsk agreements, but it has also maintained pragmatic energy-focussed economic ties with Russia. For this reason, Slovenia supports lifting the sanctions against the Russian Federation
Hungary: The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban uses good relations with Russia as leverage in Hungary’s relations with Brussels, and in order to support his own domestic . After the annexation of Crimea, the Prime Minister sought to weaken European sanctions against Russia.
EU Member States in favor of Dialogue and Compromise
Austria: Austria’s bilateral relationship with Russia is between ‘friendly pragmatist’ and ‘strategic partner’  Austria’s most successful far-right political party, the FPÖ, has exceptionally close ties to Russia . Austrian relations with Russia have not suffered significantly due to the conflict in Ukraine. In particular, energy interests continue to shape the two countries’ relationship and remain a cornerstone of Austrian diplomacy with Russia. For this reason, Austria is skeptical about the EU sanctions regime against Russia .
Finland: Finland is the one Nordic country that has always sought to find compromise with Russia due to its dependence on Russian fossil fuels and deep economic ties with Russia. Finland still sees hope in rebuilding EU-Russian relations.
Luxembourg: Luxembourg has close economic and financial ties to Russia, and is therefore reluctant to alienate Russia with punitive measures. Due to high levels of investment from Russia (and vice versa), Luxembourg is reluctant to implement EU measures aimed at restricting financials from Russia.
Netherlands: The major dimension of Russo-Dutch relations is economic.  The Netherlands did raise concerns that Russia’s behavior threatens international order and the integrity of the EU.  Furthermore, the Netherlands are hesitant but generally supportive of the common EU stance on Russia.
Spain: Being located far away from Russia and not affected by the same fears as the easternmost EU member states, Spain remains focused on engaging in dialogue with Russia. Spain remains skeptical about possible European expansion, and Russia’s status as a strategic partner in the fight against terrorism has marked Spain’s attitude of hesitance in making strong moves to counter perceived Russian threats. Economy wise, Russia does not play a significant role in Spanish energy imports, but Russian tourism plays a big role in the Spanish economy. Thus, Spain was one of the several countries to voice criticism against anti-Russian sanctions.

Call this a Transition?

The media is heralding a triumphant Brexit “transition” agreement. It is, of course, nothing of the kind.

There’s no transition, simply a delay. Britain will stay inside the EU until December 2020, paying out billions, subject to its laws, but without any say in its decisions.

What has Theresa May negotiated in return? The EU’s agreement that during the transition we can negotiate trade deals – as if a country leaving the EU did not have a natural right to make international arrangements to come into effect when it leaves. Thanks for nothing.

It’s as close as makes no difference to the “vassal state” that some in government had been saying was unacceptable. No matter, they say now, keep your “eyes on the prize”.

Further away

But that prize is getting further away, not closer. And on 27 March May hinted that timetables for leaving the EU’s customs union “might need to be revised” – in other words, extended.

When we voted to leave in June 2016 it was in the expectation – Cameron even promised it – that Article 50 would be invoked the next day. Yet come June 2018 we will be even more than two years away from leaving EU control over our borders, our laws, our economy.

Employers can continue to freely import cheap labour until December 2020 – a further 21 months – so that they can put off having to invest in technology and training British workers.

And as the fishermen point out, the EU can squeeze British fishing out of existence, and the government won’t be able to lift a finger.

The battle continues

The battle for Brexit is not over. The forces opposing us have more than two years to turn delay into the denial of democracy that they seek.

Expect more and more “reports” from corporate interests seeking to maintain the status quo.

Expect more and more moans from parts of the the civil service that everything is really too complicated and they need more time.

Expect more delaying tactics from our unrepresentative parliament.

Speak out

We warned of this in November 2017. We said the people must speak out, that the campaigns left dormant after the referendum will have to be reactivated. That’s becoming more and more urgent.

The outcry against the transition agreement has begun, in the fishing communities. It must spread across the whole of Britain.
