Activists hit Rhyl and Prestatyn with backpacks of sandwiches and bottled water. We went into the centre of each town to help out the poor and hungry. The results were disheartening, although not unexpected.
Deliberately approaching individuals who were sat on the street asking for money, we were told repeatedly 'thank you, but no thank you', when we offered food instead of money. The majority of those asking for money were asking in order to get drugs or alcohol, not because of hunger. This is tragedy for Rhyl and Prestatyn, and for much of the country.
However, it was not all bad. We met some very decent people who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. It was worth venturing out to take the time to talk to these people, who are usually simply ignored, or at best tossed a few coins. Human contact is generally not something which people care to share with those who are in trouble.
We came away with most of the food we took with us, but we were not expecting a massive uptake. We decided it would be best to take a limited amount of food, and then pop to the shop to make more sandwiches in the event of running out.
It was a day of mixed results, but still something which we should do more of. If any activists would like to carry on this task in your area (or areas of your choosing), please report in with accounts of how you get on (and pictures if possible!)
We are working for a better country. Practical aid, such as feeding the hungry, is work we must undertake. We must not become despondent when faced with people who don't want help, other than cash to continue a destructive lifestyle (which we will NOT give them). There are genuinely needy people out there. Well done to those who took the time to go on the streets in a very spur of the moment activity. These activities do make a difference.
